How did you come to learn about Fabrica?
I received an email from a friend saying the company was looking for writers. At the time I was considering coming to Europe to work so I googled it and applied. To my surprise, I was shortlisted and accepted.
What have you been doing before?
Most recently I was a sub-editor for South Africa’s biggest newspaper and tabloid, Daily Sun.
But my passion lies in writing so I have been writing for community newspapers as a freelance journalist as well.
Prior to this, I worked as a reporter for a small business enterprise publication, Gauteng Business, and a community newspaper, City Vision, on a full-time basis.
I also worked for a women’s development agency and a relief agency while completing a course in travel writing.

What do you expect to get out of this experience?

Time to indulge in projects I have never even had the opportunity to think about before.
I hope to learn more about myself and my world and, I hope to find a direction to channel my journalistic interests.
I also hope to learn more about multimedia and to experiment with these tools to tell stories.
What will you miss from home?
Lots: The people, the diverse culture, the accent, the South Africanisms, the music, the vociferous political conversation, a piping hot toasted polony special from our family take-away – Akhalwaya’s Express, and of course, I’ll miss my friends and family.
But, I’m learning to embrace the different and new and I hope to make great meaningful relationships, to indulge in different cultures and to create a home away from home.
Anything else you’d like to share with us?
I am honoured to have been selected and I look forward to a year full of experience, growth and projects that I can pour my soul into. So, watch this space ;)
Welcome Safeeyah!

How did you come to learn about Fabrica?
I apprenticed with documentary photographer Roger Lemoyne
and he encouraged me to send my portfolio to Enrico.
What have you been doing before?
I tried living in a bunch of cities, but none of them really worked out.
Havana, Montreal, Vancouver, L.A. and Toronto. Freelance retouching, shooting and assisting mixed in with some mental health work gave me money.
What do you expect to get out of this experience?
Access to countries that are a lot more expensive to reach from Canada.
What will you miss from home?
All the things I’ve left behind, particularly living in Vancouver’s China Town.
Anything else you’d like to share with us?
Be gentle with me, please?

How did you learn about Fabrica?
Somebody from Fabrica sent out an email saying that they needed new writers. Lots of people hit the forward button, and then it reached me.
What have you been doing before?
Working as a copywriter in an advertising agency, teaching drama on weekends, occasionally drawing a tacky comic strip.
What do you expect to get out of the experience?
A year actually doing the things that I’ve been thinking about forever. And I expect the cold air to help clear my pimples.
What will you miss from home?
My boyfriend Avinash, the rain, being able to go shopping without a dictionary.
Anything else?
Does anyone have a bike for sale?
Check out her blog here.

How did you come to learn about Fabrica?
A friend joined Fabrica’s video department, in 2003. I came to the website and there was a pop-up saying “We are looking for writers”. I thought it was a sign, so I started the long process of translating my work and preparing a portfolio. Finally, in July 2006, I came for my trial. But, back then, they were thinking of closing the writing department. So only now, 20 months after I took my first 1/ bus, I’m back.

What have you been doing before?

I’ve always worked at magazines. Right before I came, I was editor-in-chief of Capricho, the teenager magazine I used to read when I was 14.
What do you expect to get out of this experience?
I decided to keep my expectations very low – and let things surprise me. All I really want is to write and write and write. That’s what brought me here.
What will you miss from home?
Friday nights at the Gwercman’s, my living room window, long nights drinking with friends. But I’m sure I’ll also find new windows, new friends and, of course, new long nights of drinking.
Anything else you’d like to share with us?
Hum, not really. Only that it’s really good to be here – finally.

Jacqueline Steck has entered the building

How did you come to learn about Fabrica?

I heard about Fabrica when I was 16 and I wanted to go there straight away. When I found out that I was too young I thought that life was quite unfair. Now, 7 years later, I’m happy that I had time to grow up a bit before coming here.

What have you been doing before?

I studied Graphic Design and Advertising in Vienna for 4 1/2 years, but I got more into video and animation in the end.
What do you expect to get out of this experience?
I want to broaden my horizon in every direction, concerning people, design and video and I want to see how people coming from such diverse cultural and personal backgrounds work together in different kinds of media.
What will you miss from home?
Family and friends, Schnitzel, lactosefree products, Sachertorte, my flat, my books and going to Salzburg to jump into icecold Mondsee on a hot summer day.
Anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’d like to thank you all for the warm welcome I had here and for all the Spritz we shared and will share.

How did you come to learn about Fabrica?
Well at the beginning of 2007 former Fabricante and graduate of my university came to teach Final year Visual Communications at UniSA. He did a lecture talking about fabrica, how he got in and what he did here.
What have you been doing before?
Came straight out of my Bachelor of Visual Communication and Graphic Design at the University of South Australia. I also stacked supermarket shelves to earn a crust. Classy.
What do you expect to get out of this experience?
I expect to get lots. Lots of friends. Lots of good times and memories. Lots of sad moments. Lots of happy moments. Lots of travelling to new and exciting places. Lots of strange, disgusting, and exciting experiences. Lots of free mensa food.
What will you miss from home?
I’ll miss not being able to throw shrimps on the barbie anymore.
Anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’ve had very little experience in the real world. I’m 21 and its my first time living away from home so lots of things are new to me. The other day I spent about 20mins cleaning black mould gunk out of the soap dispenser in my washing machine in my apartment… I didn’t know you had to wash washing machines? Isn’t that a little ironic?

How did you come to learn about Fabrica?
Word of mouth…..One of my teacher visited Fabrica to conduct a workshop few year back, and also I had a friend who have been here before.
What have you been doing before?
2007 have been a massive change from fashion to Interaction design for me.
I went back to India after my master’s in Milan last year… I was in Auroville (www.auroville.org) – A town belongs to nobody…for sometime. Then shifted to Mumbai to get some cash flowing in my life, but very soon got fed up with busy streets and traffic jams of the city.
I went to my hometown (Baroda, Gujarat) and started working with some artists in my studio called “Ugly duckling”, for a Contemporary indian art exhibition named: HORN PLEASE… (www.kunstmuseumbern.ch) in National Museum of Berne, Switzerland and then travelling to Singapore in ‘08.
What do you expect to get out of this experience?
Allora, I wanted to be here…and I m here. never thought of what I can get out of it………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..I have sometime to think seriously about it.
What will you miss from home?
watching bollywood movies in theatres, volley ball, cricket, sitting on galla (cheap roadside TEA bars) for hours, my motorbike, all the roadside spicy indian fast-food, colorful festivals, monsoon…..its a long list.

Kitra Cahana has entered the building

A new fabricante. Kitra Cahana, born in the USA, raised in Sweden and a Canadian national, recently joined the photography department. Say hi to her while she tries to rub up against your ideas.
kitra-cahana.jpg What have you been doing before?
I’ve been in New York City for the past four months interning at the New York Times. Aside from that, my year at Fabrica will be a year away from my academic studies at Mcgill University in Montreal. I’ll return to the long hours at the Mcgill library, reading and writing papers for my Philosophy B.A next September.
How did you know about fabrica and how did you come here?
Fabrica and I were introduced mutually at a party last year at the Visa Pour L’image festival in Perpignan. I had a short (read: 2 min) meeting with Enrico Bossan at which time I agreed to come. Et voila.
What do you expect to learn from your time here?
I hope to dip into all the alien languages spoken here at Fabrica. People visualizing and paraphrasing the world in different mediums. I hope to rub up against other’s ideas – and then hopefully design a vocabulary of my own. In my time here I’d also like to master playing meaningfully.
What are you most looking forward to?
Turning into a new kind of creature- one which considers creative creation as a forethought. And of course uncovering a new chapter of adventures.
Anything else you’d like to share with us today?
